Llety Mawr - Jacob Sheep

Why jacob sheep?

Well, at first our reasoning was led by the heart, rather than the pocket - they are, in our opinion, probably one of the best looking of the sheep breeds. We have highland cattle so horns don't worry us, and the thirdly on a welsh hillside its quite useful to tell your sheep from the neighbours!

Jacobs though also have some very good characteristics. First and foremost their wool, which offers a good multi-coloured fleece with much more opportunity for crafts.

Jacob ewes are very good mothers, prolific and good milkers. Meat is  extra tasty and although a little more slow growing, jacob lambs provide a good quality lean meat with just enough fat to aid the cooking and eating quality.

So Jacobs it is!

Our jacobs initially came from the Coney Flock of Mrs Jenny Angell-James. We were very lucky in that Jenny only lives a short distance from us and was able to give us the choice of excellent stock. Our budget was tight and so the setup of the flock has been slow.

The aim is to have a breeding flock of 30 ewes which will take us at least until 2021 to achieve. We hope to breed and sell breeding Rams and Ewes, we also sell our jacob meat in half lamb boxes locally and get the fleeces spun into wool, and we make other items out of the wool.
